21/03/2022: Montanuniversität Leoben will conduct their annual geophysical field workshop in Ornavasso

April 25-30 Montanuniversität Leoben will conduct their annual geophysical field workshop in Ornavasso at the site of the Drilling the Ivrea-Verbano Zone (DIVE) DT-1b borehole. This field trip is part of the International Master of Science in Applied and Exploration Geophysics program, a joint degree between the University of Pisa and Montanuniversität Leoben.

The geophysical surveys will be used to locate any dislocated blocks that may be buried beneath the young Quaternary sediments at the drill site, and to characterise the near surface to assist further geophysical surveys that will be conducted after drilling.

The students will learn to use and apply the: shallow high-resolution reflection seismic; electrical-resistivity-tomography; and ground penetrating radar methods in a real life scientific investigation. The results of which will be used to precisely locate the drillhole and avoid any near surface disturbances that may hinder drilling of the sediment layers.
